Everybody needs SYSTEM, not just a system. SYSTEM stands for Saving Your Self: Time, Energy and Money. That’s what everyone is buying. Not models, not code, not pretty powerpoints. They are buying SYSTEM.
I worked in the Saas world for a while and one thing I noticed is that a lot of people thought they were selling something that they really were not. They focused on the tech and the code and had massive engineering teams that built things like engineers and as one customer put it, for engineers (that wasn’t a compliment).
People don’t buy information they buy transformation. How are you helping them transform their business? This is where the data and analytics people get it wrong. There is so much discussion about data and sometimes information but again, nobody is buying that, they are buying, transformation.
All that data you collect needs to do something. If I am a retailer and I want to sell products, I need to transform the data into actionable steps a customer can take to help them transform what they are trying to do. That was the key to success for me. Most just stopped at the data and tools.
This is why data and analytic teams are not serious parts of most business, they fail to connect the dots to all parts of the transformation and the data. Something I try to do always because that’s were the real value is.
If the team cannot answer, with detail the SYSTEM for the product, then stop. If the team has no clue what customers define as transformation, then stop. You are not building for customers you are building for your own enjoyment. You might get lucky and develop something that makes money but luck is not a business strategy to bank on.
